THE SUMMER OF SLEEPING UNDER THE STARS
This summer there have been so many difficult issues for farmers — water, bugs, Godzilla-strength weeds, really odd temperatures. But for us at Windrose the wonderful “give back” was the warm nights, all the way from June through September. One of us has been able to sleep out with our dog Bella almost every night. That was almost three times as many nights under the stars as before!
But summer is closing – summer squash and basil are done, tomatoes starting to finish and we are now waiting for the fall crops to kick in. The most beautiful new crop is a wonderful small field of leeks which are ready to start coming out in a couple weeks. Also the cool weather will have slowed down the critters and we are starting to transplant greens with harvest expected in about three weeks.
Tomatoes for two weeks more.
Our winter squash harvest will have fewer varieties as only the hardiest were the ones to survive the critters.
The next three weeks are devoted to clean up, composting, planting and working on the wood pile for the house and office stoves.
One of the best moments in fall is CELEBRATE THE CRAFT festival at the Torrey Pines Lodge in La Jolla. We are so lucky to join wine makers, chefs, food artisans and farmers for the tasting event on Sunday afternoon, the 5th of October. This is a charity event for SLOW FOOD and features really great food and wine. The highlight for all of us is the Sunday dinner afterward. Jeff Jackson and his chefs prepare a glorious family style meal for all of us who have participated. This is a most special time every year and it signals the beginning of the fall/winter season!
