Freedom and the Farmer in us all!
Today is the 4th of July, last night I finished the wonderful documentary by Ken Burns on Thomas Jefferson, and then hearing the folks from NPR read his Declaration of Independence, I am moved to contemplate what it portends to us and world we live in.
Those freedoms and the liberties so eloquently stated by Mr. Jefferson, clear, precise and immutable, require each of us to ponder our very personal set of responsibilities to assure they remain and continue to impact the world with all the goodness they exemplify. The phrase “there’s no self government without self control” comes to mind and what that means, for it is painfully clear this simple rule has not been adhered to. Here on the farm natural forces guide us in the realm of the governance of all we do. Those natural forces are not very apparent in the industrial corporate world, though at some point we all will come to know their importance. Our current economic capitalist system has a fundamental flaw, its dependence on unending expansion and very low cost inputs; fuel, labor, minerals, water, etc. Each of us knows this cannot be. We live on this ONE blue orb in an extremely vast universe, all we have is here and we must in time come into balance with its limits. So today on July 4th lets consider more carefully what REAL freedom and liberty means for us all. Simply stated it is self control and a clear commitment to our communities and sharing the resources we utilize, and the goal of BALANCE with our natural world.
Here’s to you and your family in our mutual endeavor towards sustainable foods, communities, nations, and world.
Yours with Love & Kindness
